Only a few weeks till Halloween and I don’t know about y’all but I smell pumpkin everywhere! From my home, to the treats I bake, to the vibrant smell of pumpkin pie at the grocery stores. Not only is pumpkin one of the best (and easy) go to treats for digestive upsets (trust me life saver!) but it’s also so fun to bake into treats for your pups. I’ve made a few different homemade recipes that use pumpkin, but sometimes, I need the measuring of the ingredients done for me! I highly enjoy a quick and easy cookie mix (or Zookie mix), that I love and trust for Mako! Because it’s kind of a dreary day in Raleigh, and the NC State Fair is a def no go in the rain (and the NC State football game isn’t for a little bit,) Mako and I decided to whip up some Zookies. And as it is October and Mako lovesssss Pumpkin, we decided to whip up some Pumpkin Pie Zookies! Mmm, Mmm, good!
As you can see per the instructions, these dog treats are easy to make! I would say with prep time, baking, and serving, you’re looking at a little over an hour! And my house smells incredible right now, fall has sprung in NC and in my home! You, for sure, want to get some of these ASAP!
Before we get baking, first things first though people, round up your tools. Tools I used included a measuring cup, a plastic cutting board, a large bowl, a rolling pin, and pumpkin cookies cutters. (No cookie cutters, no worries, each Zookies batch comes with its own bone shaped cookie cutter, making this, again, the easiest baking process ever)
Per the instructions, I mixed the measured out container of dough mix, with 1/2 cup of water. Once you get that cookie dough consistency, its ready to be rolled out to about 1/4 inch thick. I used two different size pumpkin cutters for variety, but I think the small would be best for next time. Continue to roll and cut out until you have little to no dough left. (I fed mako the last little bit and she was in heaven!) Separate your cut out cookies on to a baking pan about 1/2 inch apart! Finally Bake for 30 minutes!
In the meantime, wash dishes, clean your work space, and cuddle your pup! Once done, let cool for approximately 20-30minutes, you do not want to burn your pups tongues! After cooling, allow your sous chef to sample your treats! Mako was definitely excited about this part! As for storing left overs, I personally store any homemade baked goods like this in the fridge for up to a week, and in the freezer for up to 3 months (but who has time for that?!)
